Ocean Decade Dialogue online on 15 May
In this inaugural Ocean Decade Dialogue we are focussing on the first challenge of the UN Decade for Ocean Science - to understand and map land and sea-based sources of pollutants and contaminants and their potential impacts on human health and ocean ecosystems and develop solutions to remove or mitigate them - here with a particular spotlight on the Baltic Sea, the HELCOM action plan for the Baltic Sea and the work of SeaTerra GmbH in the field of explosive ordnance clearance and disposal. Online on Thursday, 15 May at 5 pm.
Actions for a healthy Baltic Sea: in view of the worrying deterioration in the environmental status of the Baltic Sea, HELCOM is working to reverse this trend and restore the Baltic Sea's ecosystems. The ‘One Baltic’ approach aims to tackle pollutants and thus contribute to the realisation of the Baltic Sea Action Plan's goal of creating a pollution-free Baltic Sea.
Unexploded ordnance at sea: An often overlooked source of pollution is legacy munitions. An estimated 40,000 tonnes of chemical munitions from the Second World War and over one million tonnes of unexploded ordnance lie on the seabed of the Baltic Sea. SeaTerra is involved in a ground-breaking project to identify and remove munitions and ordnance from the seabed and is developing solutions for the removal of legacy munitions that could be used around the world.
