Our mission
From knowledge to action
Our planet's largest habitat is in danger: overfishing, climate change, rising sea levels, waste, energy production, deep-sea mining and much more threaten our seas and ocean. As diverse as the dangers are, as extensive and far-reaching are the measures required to protect this fragile ecosystem.
The ocean is the most important factor in global climate change, a valuable supplier of resources and an ecosystem worth protecting at the same time. There is consensus among scientists and experts: time is of the essence and not only the survival of marine life, but also of humankind will not possible without a functioning ocean. Multiple recommendations for sustainable ocean action based on scientific evidence already exist - but it is crucial that these are implemented - and that we do so now.
The German Ocean Foundation creates a synergy between knowledge and action by involving science, business, politics and society. The aim is to develop a lasting partnership with the ocean through widespread "ocean awareness": among political decision-makers, opinion leaders, in the economy, among civil society and above all among younger generations. We aim to turn the current status of passivity into well-informed ocean action.
Our focus lies in the development of a constructive dialogue between all stakeholders in the field of marine policy. We are convinced that an interdisciplinary dialogue between partners offers the greatest potential for solving the most pressing problems related to the ocean and investing jointly in a sustainable future. The aim of our activities is to support non-profit initiatives and companies that contribute to the protection and preservation of the oceans.
