Message from Vidar Helgesen, Executive Secretary of IOC-UNESCO

“It is a decade for ocean action supported by science, supported by knowledge, and since the future of the ocean depends on tens of thousands of decisions made every day in governments, in local authorities, in businesses, in households, we depend on knowledge being distributed and reaching new communities so that people can make the right decisions for the benefit of the ocean. So progress for the Ocean Decade depends on connecting knowledge to people and to all those decisions. Love Your Ocean is doing exactly that, making science visible, making science understandable and making science usable.”

From the Vendée Globe to European maritime policy

The appointment of Catherine Chabaud as France's Minister for the Sea brings things full circle: few people embody the combination of adventure, responsibility, and political foresight as impressively as Catherine does. As the first woman to sail solo in the legendary Vendée Globe, she recognized early on that the ocean is more than just a venue for sporting achievements – it is the backbone of our planet.

Research at Sea Competition – Team 2 in Neustadt Bay

The research vessel ALDEBARAN is currently underway in the Baltic Sea. As part of the national Research at Sea competition, students Lena (Gymnasium Stiftung Louisenlund) and Sarah (Privatschule Mittelholstein) are investigating whether pollutants from shipwrecks in Neustadt Bay could pose a threat to humans and the sea. The various water samples they are taking near a wreck will be analysed with the support of the Institute of Toxicology at the University of Kiel, which is testing the samples for possible contamination.
