Underwater forests you can explore: New seagrass experience tent reveals the hidden world of the Baltic Sea
Niendorf/Baltic Sea, August 2026. From 14 to 23 August 2026, the large festival grounds at Niendorf Harbour will once again be transformed into a vibrant hub for marine research, environmental education and maritime discoveries. Every day from 10 am to 6 pm, the SeaExperience Days invite visitors of all ages to experience the fascinating world of the Baltic Sea with all their senses.
Discover seagrass, underwater sounds and the sea in the themed tents
At the heart of the event is the ‘meeresRaum’ by the German Marine Foundation. This year, the interactive educational and experiential area brings together three themed tents that present current marine conservation issues in a way that is easy to understand, vivid and hands-on. A new addition is the Seagrass Experience Tent, developed in collaboration with Baltic Seagrass. Living seagrass plants, aquariums, microscopes, interactive exhibits and exciting experiments demonstrate why seagrass is essential for healthy coasts and seas. This is complemented by the ‘Sound and Noise Underwater’ themed tent, featuring underwater sound and music artist Konni Zimmermann (H2Eau), who, through original recordings from the underwater world, interactive sound installations and musical experiments, vividly demonstrates how sound travels through the sea, how fish and marine mammals perceive their environment acoustically, and what effects man-made underwater noise can have on the communication and orientation of marine life. The third stop is an information tent featuring a mini-lab, aquariums, scientific exhibits and hands-on activities that change daily.
On a research voyage with the ALDEBARAN
Alongside the meeresRaum, the daily sailingLABs held on board the research and media vessel ALDEBARAN are among the highlights of the SeaExperience Days.
Together with scientists, children and young people set off on a research expedition in Neustadt Bay. They take water samples, examine plankton, learn about modern measurement technology and experience first-hand how scientific research at sea works. The sailingLABs offer an authentic insight into the work of marine researchers and bring science to life.
Discover the Baltic Sea at beachLAB
The popular beachLAB sessions also take place daily. On nature walks along the Baltic Sea beach, families explore animals, plants and other signs of coastal life together. The specimens collected are then examined and identified under a binocular microscope.
This provides fascinating insights into the history of the Baltic Sea’s formation, its diverse habitats and the extraordinary biodiversity of one of the world’s youngest seas.
