Objection to MSC certification of krill fishing

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) has lodged an official objection to the renewed MSC sustainability certification of Antarctic krill fishing. Since the 1970s, krill biomass in parts of the Southern Ocean has declined by an estimated 70 to 80%. Krill is a key species in the ecosystem and is of great importance for carbon sequestration. The German Ocean Foundation expressly supports ASOC's position: the protection of the Antarctic ecosystem is a top priority.
